Obituary for Michael “Mike” Clark Hanan
Michael “Mike” Clark Hanan, 59, of rural Fergus Falls, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017, at the Methodist Campus of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

He was born December 29, 1957, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of G. Dell and Janet (Eaton) Hanan. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1976. He then attended St. Cloud State University, graduating with a B.S. in Biology in 1980.

On June 21, 1980, Mike married Karen Segelstrom in Stillwater. They made their home in St. Cloud where Mike was employed with Stearns County as an Environmental Specialist from 1981-February of 1987. They then moved to rural Fergus Falls, where he was employed with Otter Tail County as Director of Solid Waste until the time of his death.

Mike was active in Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Fergus Falls Fish and Game Club and was a Firearms Safety Instructor. He enjoyed countless adventures with family and friends hunting and fishing across two countries and multiple states, no matter the time or weather. He also enjoyed his Sunday motorcycle rides on his Harley, dog training and spending time with his family, especially his bi-weekly trips to see his grandson, Connor and reading to him.

An excerpt from an email sent to OTC staff tells how he dedicated his time in his work ethics and with fellow employees to make a difference, “Mike worked for Otter Tail County for over 30 years and basically built the Solid Waste Department from the ground up. Mike was also recognized state-wide as a leader in his profession and would always freely share his knowledge to help others. His gentleness, kindness, and service to others will always serve as an inspiration and he will be greatly missed by many.” Mike was not only an inspiration to his co-workers, but also to the people at the hospital in the last year.

Preceding him in death was his father, G. Dell Hanan.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; son Mick (Kara) of Wagner, SD; grandchildren, Connor and Baby Hanan due in March; his mother, Janet Hanan of Springfield, OR; a sister Toki Stucky of Eugene, OR; and a brother Mitch (Karla) of Wenatchee, WA.

Memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Waterfowl Association—Woodie Camp, or The National Children’s Cancer Society.

Today we share the passing of Mike Hanan.  His friends and his family need our prayers to our Father God for His peace and comfort in this time of loss!

When Mike and I share the passing of a classmate we are saddened by the loss experienced by those closest to the family!
However, we are always encouraged but the outpouring of love, concern for the family and friends, and special memories from times past directed to the family and friends.
Let us not focus on the loss, but on the precious moments and memories shared with those who have gone before us!
The Bible tells us to focus on things that are good and lovely…
Philippians 4:8 “…whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

God bless you all!
Mike and Christy Lester
